For many clients, being on cannabinoid therapy means living a life of quality with fewer pharmaceuticals. Over time, Realm of Caring has helped thousands of individuals to find their therapeutic range with plant-based therapies. This, in turn, has helped individuals to work with their doctors to lessen or remove their daily medications.
If you are one of these individuals, then you may be wondering: how can I either donate or properly dispose of my unused or expired medications? We have gathered up a list of resources to hopefully help you out with this.
Drop off or Donate Medications
American Medicine Chest helps you by finding the closest drop off location to you. Just simply fill out this form and drop off your unused medications at a secure drop box.
Sirum is a non-profit organization who you can ship your unused medications to and they will then donate to those in need. Shipping is $10, but it is a great way to make an impact for someone who cannot afford medication.
If you are wishing to drop off a controlled substance that donation facilities typically do not accept, you can find a controlled substance public disposal location by visiting the Diversion Control Division website.
The National Conference of State Legislatures has listed drug return, reuse and recycling laws for 38 states + Guam so you can become aware of how your state handles prescription drop offs.
Disposing of Medications
Medication that is sent down a drain has the potential to pollute our environment. Medication that is thrown away may reach the soil in landfill or be ingested by wildlife that feeds on landfill items. For the purpose of protecting our environment and our health, there are specific ways to responsibly dispose of unused or expired medications.
If a medication drop-off location is not convenient for you, you can mix the left over medication with an unappealing substance such as kitty litter, dirt or coffee grounds. Placing the leftover medication in a new container will also help to make it unrecognizable for someone who is searching for pharmaceuticals that may end up harming them. Make sure whatever new container you place it in can be closed tightly, such as a coffee can.
Before recycling or tossing your prescription packaging, make sure all of your personal information is crossed off for your own protection.
