CBD & Pain for Pets

As research continues to prove the benefits of cannabidiol, the popularity of CBD products is rapidly rising. This is not only true for humans, but for pets as well! Pet owners rejoice, as early research has shown CBD may benefit multiple pet health conditions.

The discovery of the endocannabinoid system in humans led to a much greater understanding of the health benefits of CBD, and the discovery of this same endocannabinoid system in animals has opened the door to new therapy options for pets. If you have a mobility impaired pet, struggling with joint pain, arthritis, or inflammation, then keep reading as we discuss current research, safety, and whether CBD is right for you.

Benefits of CBD Oil for Pain in Pets

Due to the anti-inflammatory and analgesic therapeutics of the CBD molecule, CBD can enhance the recovery time and pain associated with sprains, fractures, surgeries, and pre-existing conditions in pets. CBD silences inflammation and pain signals by targeting them via endocannabinoids. Many pets that are senior or disabled require pain management to maintain their quality of life. Prescription pain medications such as opioids and NSAIDs can be very effective but also run the risk of coming with serious side effects. Cannabidiol on the other hand has proven to be effective with minimal side effects.

Another ailment that is a common cause for pain in pets, is arthritis. Symptoms of arthritis in pets can include joint pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. CBD has been shown to significantly decrease pain while increasing mobility, bringing quality of life back to your pets.

Specifically, a new study (Baylor of College of Medicine) showed that in a trial of dogs receiving CBD for osteoarthritis, the dogs that received low doses or placebo appeared “just as miserable as before” showing no signs of mobility improvements. However, the dogs that received higher doses saw significant improvements in their conditions, with reduced pain and increased ability to move around, as well as overall mood boosts.

“I openly admit that I was surprised at how quickly we saw such large results… [the] CBD was in fact addressing the underlying inflammatory issues. It wasn’t just masking the pain.”
Matthew Halpert PhD, Faculty with the Department of Pathology and Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine and Senior Scientific Advisor for Medterra

Things to Consider

One major question pet owners have regarding CBD usage is whether there are side effects. Because this is a much gentler treatment option, side effects in pets are mild. Typically, the only time you would see side effects is during the introduction phase of CBD or if your pet is given too high of a dosage.

Just as it’s important to determine your proper dosage when beginning CBD therapy for yourself, the same goes for your pets. An extreme dosage can be cause for concern or adverse reactions, especially in cats. Most often, the side effects seen are a loose stool or lethargy.

We recommend speaking with your vet before adding any type of supplement to your pet’s routine, especially if your pet is on any other medications. It’s also recommended you take quality into top consideration when choosing which product is right for your pet. Products that are made specifically for pets, third-party lab tested, and full-spectrum are good places to start.
