Alpha-Phellandrene and Alpha-Phellandrene-Rich Essential Oils: A Systematic Review of Biological Activities, Pharmaceutical and Food Applications

Abstract Alpha-phellandrene is a very common cyclic monoterpene found in several EOs, which shows extensive biological activities. Therefore, the main focus of the present systematic review was to provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of the state of the art regarding its biological activities and pharmaceutical and food applications. In addition, the study identified essential oils rich in alpha-phellandrene and summarized their main biological activities as a preliminary screening to encourage subsequent studies on their single components. With this review, we selected and critically analyzed 99 papers, using the following bibliographic databases: PubMed, SciELO, Wiley and WOS, on 8 July 2022. Data were independently...

Terpenes and terpenoids as main bioactive compounds of essential oils, their roles in human health and potential application as natural food preservatives

Abstract Essential oils (EOs) are volatile and concentrated liquids extracted from different parts of plants. Bioactive compounds found in EOs, especially terpenes and terpenoids possess a wide range of biological activities including anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiallergic. Available literature confirms that EOs exhibit antimicrobial and food preservative properties that are considered as a real potential application in food industry. Hence, the purpose of this review is to present an overview of current knowledge of EOs for application in pharmaceutical and medical industries as well as their potential as food preservatives in food industry.

Antimicrobial Activity of Cannabis sativa L.

The oil of the seeds, petroleum ether and methanol extracts of the whole plant of Cannabis sativa belonging to the family Cannabinaceae were screened for their antimicrobial activity against two Gram positive organisms (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), two Gram negative organisms (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and two fungi namely Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans using the cup plate agar diffusion method. The oil of the seeds of Cannabis sativa exerted pronounced antibacterial activity (21 - 28 mm) against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus, moderate activity (15 mm) against Escherichia coli and high activity (16 mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and inactive against the two fungi tested. The petroleum ether extract of the whole plant exhibited pronounced antibacterial activity...

Essential oils of different cultivars of Cannabis sativa L. and their antimicrobial activity

The essential oils of five different cultivars of Cannabis sativa contained as main compounds ˛-pinene, myrcene, trans-ˇ-ocimene, ˛-terpinolene, trans-caryophyllene and ˛-humulene. The content of ˛- terpinolene divided the cultivars in two distinct groups, an Eastern European group of cultivars of approximately 8% and a French group of cultivars of around 16%. Therefore, this compound might be suitable as a genetic marker for the two breeding centres for the fibre types of Cannabis sativa. The content of trans-caryophyllene was up to 19%. However, the content of caryophyllene oxide did not exceed 2%. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Cannabis sativa can be regarded...

In vitro antibacterial activity of Cannabis sativa leaf extracts to some selective pathogenic bacterial strains

Plant materials are important for animal and human health care and also important for microbial controlling program. This present study has been attempt to determine the antibacterial activity of Cannabis sativa leaf extract to some selective pathogenic bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomunas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhi and Klebsiella by using leaf ethanol extract and Hot water extract. Antibacterial activity of Cannabis sativa was evaluated by well diffusion methods. The highest zone of inhibition produced by ethanol extract. The leaf of Cannabis Sativa exerted pronounced antibacterial activity (24.1mm) against Staphylococcus aureus, (10.3mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, (22.2mm) against Escherichia coli, (18.1mm)...
