Lower-Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines (LRCUG) for reducing health harms from non-medical cannabis use: A comprehensive evidence and recommendations update

Abstract Background Cannabis use is common, especially among young people, and is associated with risks for various health harms. Some jurisdictions have recently moved to legalization/regulation pursuing public health goals. Evidence-based ‘Lower Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines’ (LRCUG) and recommendations were previously developed to reduce modifiable risk factors of cannabis-related adverse health outcomes; related evidence has evolved substantially since. We aimed to review new scientific evidence and to develop comprehensively up-to-date LRCUG, including their recommendations, on this evidence basis. Methods Targeted searches for literature (since 2016) on main risk factors for cannabis-related adverse health outcomes modifiable by the user-individual were conducted. Topical areas were informed...

Cannabis Use Disorder Emergency Department Visits and Hospitalizations and 5-Year Mortality

Abstract Importance  Cannabis use disorders (CUD) are associated with adverse health effects, including mental disorders and motor vehicle collision-related injuries. However, little is known about whether CUDs are associated with increased mortality risk. Objective  To examine whether individuals receiving incident hospital-based care (an emergency department visit or hospitalization) for a CUD is associated with increased risk of death. Design, Setting, and Participants  This population-based retrospective cohort study included all individuals aged 15 to 105 years living in Ontario, Canada, between 2006 and 2021 (n = 11 622 571 individuals). Overall and cause-specific mortality were compared between individuals with incident hospital-based CUD care and age- and sex-matched members of the general population...

CBD for pets: navigating quality assurance, safety standards, and marketing strategies

Abstract As the human cannabinoid (CBD) market grows, there is an inevitable transfer of the same or similar products into the veterinary sector. Advances in veterinary medicine and care of companion animals has led to extended life expectancy and consequently, there is an increased incidence of age-related chronic conditions that compromise quality of life. CBD products may alleviate these conditions. Research into CBD for companion animal species is on the rise, however, we found that there are no licensed veterinary CBD products available in the market due to a lack of appropriate testing and/or data. Here we outline the data that is available and...

Historical change in associations between perceived risk, disapproval, and use of cannabis among young adults ages 19–30, 2011–2022

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Background The current study used U.S. young adult data to examine overall and age group-specific historical trends in (a) mean perceived risk and disapproval of cannabis use, and (b) risk/use and disapproval/use associations. Methods Data were collected from 2011 to 2022 from 16,492 respondents aged 19–30 in the national Monitoring the Future panel study. Trends in mean risk and disapproval overall and by age group (19–22, 23–26, 27–30) were modeled. Models regressing any past 30-day cannabis use on risk and disapproval controlled for sex, race/ethnicity, college education, population density, state cannabis policy, region, and year....

Associations between adult cannabis use and chronic health conditions in a nationally representative sample of the United States

Please use this link to access this publication. ABSTRACT Background This study examined associations between cannabis use among U.S. adults with chronic health conditions in a nationally representative sample. Methods Four cross-sectional waves of data from the BRFSS were used, spanning 2017–2020. Multivariate logistic regression analyses assessed (a) whether number of self-reported chronic health conditions was associated with current cannabis use in the past 30-days, and (b) whether type of major chronic health conditions reported was associated with using cannabis for medical reasons in the past 30-days. Results From 2017 to 2020, the prevalence of past month cannabis use increased among all age groups,...

Multi-Modal Cannabis Use Among U.S. Young Adults: Findings from the 2022 and 2023 BRFSS in 23 States

Abstract Cannabis use among young adults in the U.S. has nearly doubled in recent years, driven by diverse methods of consumption and evolving cannabis legalization. Multi-modal cannabis use among young adults is an emerging public health issue that remains underexplored. This study examines the prevalence, patterns, and predictors of multi-modal cannabis use, defined as the use of two or more administration methods of cannabis use (e.g., smoking, vaping, edibles, dabbing, other forms) in the past month, among U.S. young adults aged 18–34 years. Data from the 2022–2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) across 23 states (n = 7635; weighted n = 7,482,134) show...

Cannabis Consumption Among Adults Aged 55–65 in Canada, 2018–2021

Abstract Cannabis consumption among aging adults in Canada is increasing. The aims of the study were to examine cannabis consumption patterns before and after non-medical cannabis legalization and assess whether these patterns differ between men and women. Data were analyzed from Canadian respondents in a repeat cross-sectional survey conducted in 2018–2021. Analyses were conducted among adults aged 55–65 (n = 18,177) who had consumed cannabis in the past 12-month (n = 4119). Past 12-month cannabis consumption significantly increased among 55–65-year-olds from 2018 (19.3%) to the first-year post-legalization in 2019 (24.5%; p < .001), but remained stable thereafter (24.3%, and 25.6% in 2020 and 2021). More men reported past...

The acute effects of vaporized cannabis on drivers’ hazard perception and risk-taking behaviors in medicinal patients: A within-subjects experiment

Abstract Introduction: As the medically prescribed use of cannabis flower continues to increase, there is a need to understand how vaporized cannabis can acutely affect driving-related skills and risk-taking behaviors in medicinal populations. Method: Given this, the present study examined the acute effects of vaporized cannabis flower on measures of hazard perception, driving-related risk-taking behaviors, and subjective perceptions of driving skills in a sample of adult medicinal cannabis patients. Participants (N = 38, M age = 43) attended both a baseline (no cannabis) and intervention appointment (with cannabis consumption), where they completed video-based tasks and self-report measures of driving ability. Results: After vaporizing one dose of their prescribed cannabis flower, participants exhibited no...

Unmet Healthcare Needs and Medical Cannabis Use Among Sexual and Gender Minoritized Adults in a High-Stigma Environment

Please use this link to access this publication. ABSTRACT Sexual and gender minoritized (SGM) individuals in high-stigma areas may use cannabis to cope with unmet healthcare needs and elevated stress. Adults in Oklahoma (Mage = 43.9[SD = 16.8], 54.5% female, 71.4% non-Hispanic White) completed a cross-sectional survey (August-September 2022). Logistic regression examined the association of SGM identity (SGM or non-SGM) with past-year unmet healthcare need (yes/no). Logistic and linear regressions also examined main and interactive effects of SGM identity and unmet healthcare needs on past-month medical cannabis use and number of relaxation/tension-reduction reasons for cannabis use endorsed. Analyses were unadjusted and adjusted for sociodemographic and healthcare characteristics. In...

International perspectives on physician knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to medical cannabis

Abstract Background: The trends of recreational use of cannabis and the use of cannabis for medical indications (i.e., “medical cannabis”) have grown in recent years. Despite that, there is still limited scientific evidence to guide clinical decision-making, and the strength of evidence for the medical use of cannabis is currently considered to be low. In contrast, there is growing evidence of negative health outcomes related to the use of cannabis. In this rapidly shifting landscape, the role of physician attitudes regarding the therapeutic value of cannabis has become essential. This study aimed to characterize knowledge/experience, attitudes, and potential predictors of clinical practice regarding medical cannabis....
