Relief of nocturnal neuropathic pain with the use of cannabis in a patient with Fabry disease

Abstract Neuropathic pain is one of the most invalidating symptoms in patients with Fabry disease (FD), affecting their quality of life, it is linked to small fiber neuropathy and it may not respond to available disease specific treatments. We report the case of a 32 years old man with classic FD and severe neuropathic pain who, after the failure of several standard pharmaceutical approaches, was treated with medical cannabis with relief of nocturnal pain and sleep improvement.

Evaluating Sex Differences in Efficacy, Safety and Pharmacokinetics in Patients Treated with Cannabis by a Metered-Dose Inhaler

Abstract Background: Clinical studies on medical cannabis (MC) treatment have shown sex-related differences, including higher susceptibility to adverse events among women and greater analgesia among men. Here, we used the Syqe metered-dose inhaler (MDI) and a single chemovar to analyze sex differences. Methods: A total of 1249 Israeli chronic pain patients were assessed for pain intensity, sleep and adverse events (AEs) over 240 days. Results: Following the first two weeks, no significant sex differences were found in the effectiveness or safety of MC treatment (p > 0.05). Inhaled Δ9-THC doses did not vary significantly between sexes (p > 0.05) except in the first month of treatment....

The endocannabinoid system and orofacial pains: updates and perspectives

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Since the relatively recent discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and its fundamental role in regulating other systems, the subject has aroused interest in all areas of health, including Dentistry. Among the possible uses and benefits of cannabinoids are their performance in pain and its predisposing or perpetuating factors, such as bruxism and sleep disorders. Although the literature is still scarce, the mechanisms of action and satisfactory results of cannabinoids and other cannabis derivatives in these situations already allow their safe prescription. The objective of this study was to verify the current evidence on the use of cannabis derivatives in...

The Place of Cannabinoids in the Treatment of Gynecological Pain

Abstract Cannabis sativa (L), a plant with an extensive history of medicinal usage across numerous cultures, has received increased attention over recent years for its therapeutic potential for gynecological disorders such as endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and primary dysmenorrhea, due at least in part to shortcomings with current management options. Despite this growing interest, cannabis inhabits an unusual position in the modern medical pharmacopoeia, being a legal medicine, legal recreational drug, and an illicit drug, depending on jurisdiction. To date, the majority of studies investigating cannabis use have found that most people are using illicit cannabis, with numerous obstacles to medical cannabis adoption having been...

Prenatal Cannabinoid Exposure Elicits Memory Deficits Associated with Reduced PSA-NCAM Expression, Altered Glutamatergic Signaling, and Adaptations in Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity

Abstract Cannabis is now one of the most commonly used illicit substances among pregnant women. This is particularly concerning since developmental exposure to cannabinoids can elicit enduring neurofunctional and cognitive alterations. This study investigates the mechanisms of learning and memory deficits resulting from prenatal cannabinoid exposure (PCE) in adolescent offspring. The synthetic cannabinoid agonist WIN55,212-2 was administered to pregnant rats, and a series of behavioral, electrophysiological, and immunochemical studies were performed to identify potential mechanisms of memory deficits in the adolescent offspring. Hippocampal-dependent memory deficits in adolescent PCE animals were associated with decreased long-term potentiation (LTP) and enhanced long-term depression (LTD) at hippocampal Schaffer...

Supporting gut health with medicinal cannabis in people with advanced cancer: potential benefits and challenges

Please use this link to access this publication: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41416-023-02466-w Abstract The side effects of cancer therapy continue to cause significant health and cost burden to the patient, their friends and family, and governments. A major barrier in the way in which these side effects are managed is the highly siloed mentality that results in a fragmented approach to symptom control. Increasingly, it is appreciated that many symptoms are manifestations of common underlying pathobiology, with changes in the gastrointestinal environment a key driver for many symptom sequelae. Breakdown of the mucosal barrier (mucositis) is a common and early side effect of many anti-cancer agents, known to...

Evaluation of different phytochemicals from Cannabis sativa against Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein receptor

Abstract There is a rapid spread of multiple sclerosis (MS) disorder across the globe. There are around 2.8 million cases of Multiple Sclerosis in the world; among them, 1 million are just present in the US. Many drugs have been tested on MS patients but there is no effective treatment for MS till now. Many agonists, such as dronabinol, and nabilone, have been used to treat MS. So, in this study, different compounds from Cannabis sativa to inhibit the symptoms caused by MS had been evaluated. This study targeted the Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein receptor as it has shown some good results in experimental labs. In this study, binding...

Cannabis and Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Scoping Review Evaluating the Benefits, Risks, and Future Research Directions

Abstract Rheumatoid diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia, are characterized by progressive inflammation in the musculoskeletal system, predominantly affecting the joints and leading to cartilage and bone damage. The resulting pain and ongoing degradation of the musculoskeletal system contribute to reduced physical activity, ultimately impacting quality of life and imposing a substantial socioeconomic burden. Unfortunately, current therapeutics have limited efficacy in slowing disease progression and managing pain. Thus, the development of novel and alternative therapies is imperative. Cannabinoids possess beneficial properties as potential treatments for rheumatoid diseases due to their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Preclinical studies have demonstrated promising results in halting disease...

Venous thromboembolism and cannabis consumption, outcomes among hospitalized patients in the United States: A nationwide analysis

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) carries significant clinical implications, and with the rise in cannabis consumption, its potential influence on VTE outcomes warrants investigation. Using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2016–2019), we analyzed 2,217,184 hospitalized VTE patients. Among these, 1.8 % (38,810) reported cannabis use. We compared demographics, comorbidities, in-hospital outcomes, and quality metrics between cannabis users and non-users with VTE. Cannabis users were chiefly younger males (average age 45 in cannabis users vs. 62 in non-cannabis users) from lower-income brackets. Notably, 5.4 % discharged against medical advice. Although in-hospital mortality was initially lower for cannabis users (2.8 % vs. 5.1 %,...

Efficacy and Safety of Medical Cannabis in Neuropathic Pain Patients

Please use this link to access this publication: https://he02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/anesthai/article/view/266158 Abstract Introduction: Nowadays, cannabis plays a larger role in medical treatment. However, there is a lack of evidence on the treatment of neuropathic pain patients in Thailand. This research aims to study the clinical efficacy of medical cannabis for relieving neuropathic pain and effects of neuropathic pain on quality of life. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in non-palliative care patients with neuropathic pain treated with medical cannabis at Lampang Hospital from August 28, 2019 to October 3, 2021. The data about baseline characteristics, pain scores, quality of life and side effects were collected from outpatient...
