Getting “The whole picture”: A review of international research on the outcomes of regulated cannabis supply

Abstract Background Several jurisdictions have pursued reforms that regulate cannabis production and/or sale for adult (non-medical) use. Looking at outcomes of such reforms across multiple jurisdictions may help to identify outcomes that are inherent to non-criminal cannabis supply, as well as provide insight into the outcomes of specific regulation models. Methods We identified nine indicators of cannabis policy outcomes and aggregated them into three domains (social outcomes, outcomes in cannabis use, health-related outcomes). We assessed these outcomes across five jurisdictions with different models of regulating cannabis supply (Netherlands, Spain, U.S. states that legalized cannabis, Uruguay, and Canada). We used a three-level systematic literature review,...

Effect of Preoperative Oral Cannabidiol-Rich Cannabis Extract on Anxiety and Postoperative Pain after Endodontic Treatment: A Double-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Introduction The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD)-rich Cannabis extract in reducing anxiety and postoperative pain in patients submitted to endodontic treatment. Methods The study was carried out after approval by the Research Ethics Committee (Registration No. 5.075.961). The following groups were tested: CBD and placebo. Pain was measured using a visual analog scale before the start of treatment and 24, 48, and 72 hours and 7 days after the session. Anxiety was assessed using the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale and a visual analog scale, before and immediately after treatment. In addition,...

UK Medical Cannabis Registry: A Clinical Outcomes Analysis for Epilepsy

ABSTRACT Background A third of epilepsy patients fail to enter seizure remission despite optimal therapeutic management. Cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) have shown promise as a potential therapy. However, a paucity of high-quality literature regarding CBMPs’ efficacy and safety profile means further investigation is needed. The study aimed to examine changes in epilepsy-specific and general health-related quality of life (HRQoL) patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in individuals with treatment-resistant epilepsy. Methods A case series of patients with epilepsy from the UK Medical Cannabis Registry analyzed changes in Quality of Life in Epilpesy-31 (QOILE-31), Single-Item Sleep Quality Score (SQS), EQ-5D-5L, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Global...

Sex differences in the acute effects of cannabis on human cognition: A systematic review

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Acute cannabis exposure can transiently impair cognitive performance, increasing the risk of accidental injury and potentially disrupting activities of daily living. Although sex differences in responses to cannabis have been reported, no systematic review has examined whether these extend to acute cognitive effects. Our primary aim was to examine sex differences in the acute effects of cannabis (including isolated delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol [THC]) on cognition in humans. Our secondary aim was to determine if sex differences in the acute effects of cannabis vary by cognitive domain, route of administration, or dosing paradigm. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted...

Impact of Medical Cannabis on the Quality of Life of Cancer Patients: A Critical Review

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to review the literature on the impact of medical cannabis (MC) on the quality of life (QoL) of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A critical review was conducted using PubMed, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Scopus, Virtual Health Library, and Embase. The inclusion criteria were access to the full content; in English, Spanish, or Portuguese; published until January 2025, relating “Cancer,” “Quality of Life,” and “Medical Cannabis.” Of the 267 articles identified, 16 were selected for the final analysis. Results: The studies suggest that MC can improve mental health, sleep, appetite, and...

Genetic Insights into Cannabis-induced Psychosis: Role of CNR1 Gene Mutation (rs1049353) and Implications— A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract Background: Considering the effects of environmental factors and genetic predispositions on mental health outcomes, the current work concentrated on the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CNR1) gene single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1049353 as one of the primary genetic markers for cannabis-induced psychosis (CIP). By analyzing this SNP, the study contributes to the corpus of information to identify genetic traits that ultimately predict the response of an evolving disease following exposure to a particular substance after gene and environmental interaction and risk of a particular disease. Methods: Grouped by CIP, cannabis use without psychosis, schizophrenia unlinked to cannabis use, and a healthy control group, a thorough investigation...

The Complex Relationship Between Cannabis Use and Mental Health: Considering the Influence of Cannabis Use Patterns and Individual Factors

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract The relationship between cannabis use and mental health is complex, as studies often report seemingly contradictory findings regarding whether cannabis use results in more positive or negative treatment outcomes. With an increasing number of individuals using cannabis for both recreational (i.e., non-medical) and medical purposes, it is critical to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which cannabis may be helpful or harmful for those diagnosed with psychiatric disorders. Although cannabis is composed of hundreds of compounds, studies assessing the effects of “cannabis” most often report the impact of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (d9-THC), the primary intoxicating...

Enhancing Perinatal Cannabis Use Counseling: Insights From Taiwan’s Addiction Treatment Practice

Please use this link to access this publication. ABSTRACT This letter responds to Cernat et al.'s study on counseling about cannabis use during pregnancy and lactation, drawing parallels with addiction treatment practices in Taiwan. We highlight the importance of open, non-judgmental approaches and harm reduction strategies in counseling pregnant women with substance use disorders. Our experience at a psychiatric center in Taiwan emphasizes the need for continuous counseling throughout pregnancy and postpartum, particularly given the observed increase in cannabis use among new mothers. We support the study's emphasis on exploring patients' perceived benefits from cannabis use and addressing underlying reasons for use. By integrating insights...

Quantitative Analysis of Propofol Dosage in Cannabis Users: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Rising cannabis use poses significant challenges in the administration of general anesthetics, particularly propofol, due to potential alterations in pharmacodynamics caused by tetrahydrocannabinol and its interactions with central nervous system receptors. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to consolidate the existing literature to quantify propofol requirements in cannabis users, highlighting the complex relationship between cannabis use and anesthetic management. Methods: A systematic search of English-language literature was conducted to identify studies with data on propofol dosing in adult cannabis users. Propofol requirements were defined as the total intraoperative dose needed to achieve and maintain adequate sedation or anesthesia, assessed using parameters like monitoring and...

Cannabis-Induced Wellens Syndrome: A Rising Cardiovascular Risk

Abstract Wellens syndrome is a rare variant of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) that often heralds an impending large anterior wall myocardial infarction. We present the case of a young male with no traditional coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors. Despite only minimally elevated troponin levels, the patient's smoking history, serial electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, and the emerging evidence linking cannabis use to cardiovascular risk contributed to the timely diagnosis of Wellens syndrome. Although cannabis is increasingly accepted for medical and recreational use, growing concerns have been raised about its potential adverse cardiovascular effects. This case highlights the importance of early identification and prompt intervention. In Wellens syndrome,...
