A cross-sectional examination of choice and behavior of veterans with access to free medicinal cannabis

Abstract   Background: With a rise in public pressure to increase veteran access to medicinal cannabis, free cannabis collectives for military veterans are proliferating across the US. Objectives: The aim of the current study was to document which cannabis formulations and routes of administration are chosen by veterans with increased access to cannabis, and to determine whether cannabis is being used as a substitute for other licit and illicit drugs.   Method: The current study collected cross-sectional self-report data on cannabis use, cannabinoid constituent composition, primary indication of use, and substitution practices among a sample of 93 US military veterans (84.9% male) with access...

Antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects of cannabidiol: a chemical compound of Cannabis sativa

Anxiety and depression are pathologies that affect human beings in many aspects of life, including social life, productivity and health. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a constituent non-psychotomimetic of Cannabis sativa with great psychiatric potential, including uses as an antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like compound. The aim of this study is to review studies of animal models using CBD as an anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like compound. Studies involving animal models, performing a variety of experiments on the above-mentioned disorders, such as the forced swimming test (FST), elevated plus maze (EPM) and Vogel conflict test (VCT), suggest that CBD exhibited an anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in animal models discussed. Experiments with...

Cannabidiol, a Cannabis sativa constituent, as an anxiolytic drug

OBJECTIVES: To review and describe studies of the non-psychotomimetic constituent of Cannabis sativa, cannabidiol (CBD), as an anxiolytic drug and discuss its possible mechanisms of action. METHOD: The articles selected for the review were identified through searches in English, Portuguese, and Spanish in the electronic databases ISI Web of Knowledge, SciELO, PubMed, and PsycINFO, combining the search terms "cannabidiol and anxiolytic", "cannabidiol and anxiolytic-like", and "cannabidiol and anxiety". The reference lists of the publications included, review articles, and book chapters were handsearched for additional references. Experimental animal and human studies were included, with no time restraints. RESULTS: Studies using animal models of anxiety and involving healthy...

Chemical constituents of marijuana: The complex mixture of natural cannabinoids

The cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa L.) and products thereof (such as marijuana, hashish and hash oil) have a long history of use both as a medicinal agent and intoxicant. Over the last few years there have been an active debate regarding the medicinal aspects of cannabis. Currently cannabis products are classified as Schedule I drugs under the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Controlled Substances act, which means that the drug is only available for human use as an investigational drug. In addition to the social aspects of the use of the drug and its abuse potential, the issue of approving it as a medicine is...

In vitro antibacterial activity of Cannabis sativa leaf extracts to some selective pathogenic bacterial strains

Plant materials are important for animal and human health care and also important for microbial controlling program. This present study has been attempt to determine the antibacterial activity of Cannabis sativa leaf extract to some selective pathogenic bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomunas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhi and Klebsiella by using leaf ethanol extract and Hot water extract. Antibacterial activity of Cannabis sativa was evaluated by well diffusion methods. The highest zone of inhibition produced by ethanol extract. The leaf of Cannabis Sativa exerted pronounced antibacterial activity (24.1mm) against Staphylococcus aureus, (10.3mm) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, (22.2mm) against Escherichia coli, (18.1mm)...

Safety and Side Effects of Cannabidiol, a Cannabis sativa Constituent

Cannabidiol (CBD), a major nonpsychotropic constituent of Cannabis, has multiple pharmacological actions, including anxiolytic, antipsychotic, antiemetic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, little is known about its safety and side effect profile in animals and humans. This review describes in vivo and in vitro reports of CBD administration across a wide range of concentrations, based on reports retrieved from Web of Science, Scielo and Medline. The keywords searched were “cannabinoids”, “cannabidiol” and “side effects”. Several studies suggest that CBD is non-toxic in non-transformed cells and does not induce changes on food intake, does not induce catalepsy, does not affect physiological parameters (heart rate, blood pressure and...

Treatment of Tourette syndrome with cannabinoids

Cannabinoids have been used for hundred of years for medical purposes. To day, the cannabinoid delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the cannabis extract nabiximols are approved for the treatment of nausea, anorexia and spasticity, respectively. In Tourette syndrome (TS) several anecdotal reports provided evidence that marijuana might be effective not only in the suppression of tics, but also in the treatment of associated behavioural problems. At the present time there are only two controlled trials available investigating the effect of THC in the treatment of TS. Using both self and examiner rating scales, in both studies a significant tic reduction could be observed after treatment...
