Geotemporospatial and causal inference epidemiological analysis of US survey and overview of cannabis, cannabidiol and cannabinoid genotoxicity in relation to congenital anomalies 2001–2015

Abstract Background Cannabinoids including cannabidiol have recognized genotoxic activities but their significance has not been studied broadly epidemiologically across the teratological spectrum. We examined these issues including contextual space-time relationships and formal causal inferential analysis in USA. Methods State congenital anomaly (CA) rate (CAR) data was taken from the annual reports of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network 2001–2005 to 2011–2015. Substance abuse rates were from the National Survey of Drug Use and Health a nationally representative longitudinal survey of the non-institutionalized US population with 74.1% response rate. Drugs examined were cigarettes, monthly and binge alcohol, monthly cannabis and analgesic and cocaine abuse. Early...

Cannabis Use and the Endocannabinoid System: A Clinical Perspective

Abstract Societal attitudes toward cannabis, both as a drug of abuse and as a potential therapeutic, have undergone a marked shift in the past 25 years, resulting in wide-scale changes in legalization, public policy, and marketing of cannabis and its constituents (cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol). Cannabis has abuse liability, producing positive subjective effects, and repeated use over time can result in a use disorder, which can include withdrawal symptoms (sleep disruption, irritability, anxiety, anorexia, craving), unsuccessful attempts to cut down or quit, and failure to fulfill obligations. The consequences of having a cannabis use disorder are rarely as destructive to individual lives as other...

Cannabis, cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol in sport: an overview

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract The World Anti-Doping Agency now allows cannabidiol (CBD) to be taken in elite sport, but has retained all other cannabinoids on its banned list. This, together with liberalisation of cannabis laws, has led to an increasing interest in its use in sport. This includes commercial sponsorship of sporting events and highlights the need for accurate information to be readily available to athletes and their advisers. This narrative review confirms that CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) do not enhance performance. CBD possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that have not been adequately evaluated in the area of sport....

Cannabis sativa as a Treatment for Obesity: From Anti-Inflammatory Indirect Support to a Promising Metabolic Re-Establishment Target

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Introduction: Obesity is defined as an excess of accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health. Storage of excess fat in the adipose tissue triggers an inflammatory process, which makes obesity a low-grade chronic inflammatory disease. Obesity is considered a complex and multifactorial disease; hence, no intervention strategy appears to be an ideal treatment for all individuals. Therefore, new therapeutic alternatives are often studied for the treatment of this disease. Currently, herbal medicines are gaining ground in the treatment of obesity and its comorbidities. In this context, much attention is being paid to Cannabis...

Increase in Cannabis Use Among Adults With Rheumatic Diseases: Results From a 2014–2019 United States Observational Study

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Objective Despite advances in treatments and outcomes among patients with rheumatic diseases, there is an unmet need in pain management. Cannabis has emerged as a potential opioid-sparing alternative, with arthritic pain as a commonly cited reason for medicinal cannabis use. However, little is known, and we set out to understand patterns of cannabis use in a US-wide rheumatic disease population. Methods The study included participants in FORWARD, The National Databank for Rheumatic Diseases. Participants were asked in 2014 and 2019 about their past and current cannabis use. Demographic characteristics, patient-reported outcomes, medications, comorbidities, and diagnoses...

Randomized controlled trials on the use of cannabis-based medicines in movement disorders: a systematic review

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Anecdotal references, preclinical, and non-randomized studies support the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids for movement disorders (MD). To create an evidenced-based point of view for patients and physicians, we performed a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCT) on the use of cannabinoids in MD. The seven RCTs found on PD used different cannabis formulations. No improvement of motor symptoms was shown in any of the two RCTs with this as primary outcome (PO), but in the nabilone group, an improvement in quality of life was documented. Of the three RCTs having levodopa-induced dyskinesia as PO,...

Medicinal Cannabis for the Treatment of Chronic Refractory Pain: An Investigation of the Adverse Event Profile and Health-Related Quality of Life Impact of an Oral Formulation

Abstract Introduction: Medicinal cannabis is prescribed in Australia for patients with chronic refractory pain conditions. However, measures of safety and effectiveness of different cannabinoids are lacking. We designed an observational study to capture effectiveness, adverse events (AEs), and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measures in patients prescribed an oral medicinal cannabis formulation at Cannabis Access Clinics through the Cannabis Access Clinics Observational study (CACOS). Objectives: We aimed to evaluate effectiveness, reported AEs, and change in patient-reported outcomes in individuals prescribed a cannabinoid oil formulation for management of chronic pain. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on patients prescribed an oil formulation of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol for pain symptoms of...

Safety and Efficacy of Medical Cannabis in Autism Spectrum Disorder Compared with Commonly Used Medications

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of medications commonly used in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and compare this to what current research has shown regarding medical cannabis use in this population. Methods: Searches were performed to collect information surrounding currently used medications and their safety and efficacy profiles, biologic plausibility of cannabis use for symptoms of ASD, and studies detailing cannabis' safety and efficacy profile for use in the ASD population. Results were used to compare medications to cannabis as a proposed treatment. Results: The heterogeneity of ASD produces great difficulties...

Insilico inquest reveals the efficacy of Cannabis in the treatment of post-Covid-19 related neurodegeneration

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the Covid-19 pandemic has proved itself as the deadliest pathogen. A major portion of the population has become susceptible to this strain. Scientists are pushing their limits to formulate a vaccine against Covid-19 with the least side effects. Although the recent discoveries of vaccines have shown some relief from the covid infection rate, however, physical fatigue, mental abnormalities, inflammation and other multiple organ damages are arising as post-Covid symptoms. The long-term effects of these symptoms are massive. Patients with such symptoms are known as long-haulers and treatment strategy against...

Long-term observational studies with cannabis-based medicines for chronic non-cancer pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis of effectiveness and safety

Abstract Background and Objective This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness, tolerability and safety of cannabis-based medicines (CbMs) for chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) in long-term observational studies. Databases and Data Treatment CENTRAL, EMBASE and MEDLINE were searched until December 2021. We included prospective observational studies with a study duration ≥26 weeks. Pooled estimates of event rates of categorical data and standardized mean differences (SMD) of continuous variables were calculated using a random effects model. Results Six studies were included with 2686 participants, with study duration ranging between 26 and 52 weeks. Pain conditions included nociceptive, nociplastic, neuropathic and mixed pain mechanisms. The certainty of evidence for every...
