Cannabis Use and Oral Health in a National Cohort of Adults

ABSTRACT Background: Cannabis use is common and increasing among adults. Evidence connects cannabis use to poor periodontal health, but few prospective studies exist of adults in the United States. Methods: This investigation examined associations between cannabis use and self-reported adverse oral health conditions among participants (N = 18,872) in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, a nationally representative cohort. Survey-weighted regression modeling estimated associations between cannabis use and seven self-reported measures of oral health status, adjusted for tobacco use and other disease risk factors. Results: Reporting past-30-days cannabis use in any of PATH Waves 1–3 was positively and statistically significantly associated at Wave 4...

Cannabis use frequency, route of administration, and co-use with alcohol among older adults in Washington state

Abstract Background The US national surveys and data from legal adult use cannabis states show increases in the prevalence of cannabis use among older adults, though little is known about their manner of cannabis consumption. Here, we examine cannabis use frequency, routes of cannabis administration, and co-use with alcohol, focusing on adults aged 50–64 and ≥65. Methods Data come from a general population survey conducted January 2014–October 2016 (N=5492) in Washington state. We first estimate prevalence and trends in cannabis frequency, routes of administration, and co-use with alcohol in gender by age groups (18–29, 30–49, 50–64, ≥ 65). To test associations between cannabis frequency,...

Acute Effects of Cannabis on Symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Background Little is known about the the acute effects of cannabis on symptoms of OCD in humans. Therefore, this study sought to: 1) examine whether symptoms of OCD are significantly reduced after inhaling cannabis, 2) examine predictors (gender, dose, cannabis constituents, time) of these symptom changes and 3) explore potential long-term consequences of repeatedly using cannabis to self-medicate for OCD symptoms, including changes in dose and baseline symptom severity over time. Method Data were analyzed from the app Strainprint® which provides medical cannabis patients a means of tracking changes in symptoms as a function of...

Efficacy and safety of paediatric medicinal cannabis use: A scoping review

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Introduction The use of medicinal cannabis in the paediatric age group is increasing despite the lack of evidence for its efficacy or safety. Objective To map the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of medicinal cannabis in children and adolescents. Methods We conducted a scoping review and searched six electronic databases and grey literature. A study was eligible for inclusion when it investigated the efficacy or safety of medicinal cannabis for any condition, more than half of the participants were 0 to 18 years old, and had any study design except single case reports....

The endocannabinoid system, cannabis, and cannabidiol: Implications in urology and men’s health

Abstract Background: The endocannabinoid system is a neuromodulatory system responsible for partial regulation of cognitive and emotional processes in the human central nervous system such as behavior, mood disorders, and neurologic disorders such as epilepsy. The endocannabinoid system is also prevalent throughout the peripheral nervous system and human body and its receptors and signaling pathways are present and active in areas including the male and female reproductive tracts and organ systems such as the urologic and gastrointestinal system. Summary: The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with a brief background on the endocannabinoid system and to discuss the implications of the...

Cannabis use and mental health among young sexual and gender minority men: A qualitative study

Please use this link to access this publication. ABSTRACT Despite a growing body of evidence demonstrating that cannabis use is associated with mental illness among sexual and gender minority (SGM) men, little is known about the motivations, patterns and contexts that influence this relationship. Our study aimed to characterize how cannabis use features within the mental health-related experiences of young SGM men in Vancouver, Canada. From January to December 2018, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 50 SGM men ages 15 to 30 years to explore their experiences using cannabis. We draw on thematic analysis to reveal three themes regarding participants’ experiences with cannabis use...

Perceived risk of harm from monthly cannabis use among US adolescents: National Survey on drug Use and Health, 2017

Abstract There has been a steady increase in cannabis use among US adolescents over the past decade. Perceptions of risk, specifically the belief that cannabis use is not harmful, may contribute to this increased use. The purpose of this study was to evaluate parental, school, and peer influence as protective factors in perceiving there is risk of harm from monthly cannabis use. Using the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), the study outcome was self-reported perceived risk of harm from monthly cannabis use amongst adolescents between ages 12 and 17. The exposures were parental monitoring and support, perception of school importance, extracurricular activity participation, peer...

Cannabis Product Ingestions in Pediatric Patients: Ranges of Exposure, Effects, and Outcomes

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Introduction Pediatric exposures to cannabis edibles have been associated with serious adverse effects, such as respiratory depression. Yet, their incidence and relationship to exposure characteristics are not well defined. We attempt to describe the temporal, demographic, and clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with edible cannabis exposures and examine the relationship between these characteristics and two clinical outcomes: need for respiratory support and hospital admission. Methods A retrospective chart review was conducted at a single, tertiary care academic medical center covering a 28-month period. Inclusion criteria were: evaluation in the ED, age <18 years at the time of presentation, and physician documented exposure...

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of two standardized extracts from a new Chinese accession of non-psychotropic Cannabis sativa L.

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of two extracts from a new Chinese accession (G-309) of Cannabis sativa L. (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol <0.2%) with high content of propyl side chain phytocannabinoids. Dried flowering tops, as such and after hydrodistillation of the essential oil, were extracted with acidic hexane to produce the Cannabis Chinese hexane extract 1 (CChHE1) and 2 (CChHE2), respectively. The phytochemical profile of CChHE1 and CChHE2 was investigated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and liquid chromatography–diode array detector–electrospray ionization–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS) analyses. The antioxidant properties were assessed by several...

Endocannabinoid Levels in Ulcerative Colitis Patients Correlate With Clinical Parameters and Are Affected by Cannabis Consumption

ABSTRACT Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic, idiopathic, inflammatory, gastrointestinal disorders. The endocannabinoid system may have a role in the pathogenesis of IBD. We aimed to assess whether cannabis treatment influences endocannabinoids (eCBs) level and clinical symptoms of IBD patients. Methods: Blood samples and biopsies were taken from IBD patients treated by either cannabis or placebo for 8 weeks. Immunohistochemistry for N-acyl-phosphatidylethanolamine-selective phospholipase D (NAPE-PLD) and fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) expression was done on colon biopsies, and sample levels of anandamide (AEA), eCB2-arachidonylglycerol (2-AG), arachidonic acid (AA), palmitoylethanolamine (PEA), and oleoylethanolamine (OEA) were measured in patient’s sera before and after cannabis treatment. Caco-2 cells were...
