Cannabis use and suicide in people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal, case control, and cross-sectional studies

Abstract Cannabis use is highly prevalent in people with schizophrenia and is related to adverse clinical outcomes, including relapse and hospitalization. However, the relationship between cannabis and suicide remains inconclusive. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the relationship between cannabis use and suicide-related outcomes in people with schizophrenia. A comprehensive search of Medline, Embase, and PsycINFO for cross-sectional, case-control, and longitudinal studies was conducted using search terms from database inception to November 2024 inclusive. Computation of odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) was performed using random effects models with DerSimonian-Laird estimation. All studies were appraised for quality. We also evaluated heterogeneity,...

Medical cannabis: Regulatory review in United States, European Union and United Kingdom

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Cannabis contains compounds like delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol, which are commonly used for epilepsy, anxiety and chronic pain. Medical marijuana involves the utilization of cannabis for therapeutic objectives, such as the management of various ailments. Given the vast array of potential pharmacological and medicinal applications of cannabis and its by-products, there has been a surge of interest in developing cannabis-related products. Because it presents a potential health hazard and is still under clinical investigation, a set of guidelines is needed for its safe use. Based on market research, medicinal cannabis development is currently established worldwide, including...

Review of cannabis use and propofol anesthesia: recent insights and clinical implications

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Purpose of review We examine recent evidence and clinical implications of pharmacological interactions between cannabis and propofol, perioperative considerations for propofol administration, including dosing adjustments and cardiovascular effects, summarize current recommendations, and propose future research directions. Recent findings Recent studies revealed associations between chronic cannabis use and higher propofol dose administered for procedural sedation and general anesthesia. While several pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic pathways have been proposed to explain these associations, no evidence currently supports causality, and the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Other clinically relevant considerations for propofol anesthesia in patients who use cannabis include cardiovascular...

Pharmacotherapies for cannabis use disorder

Please use this link to access this publication. ABSTRACT Rationale Globally, cannabis use is prevalent and widespread. There are currently no pharmacotherapies approved for the treatment of cannabis use disorder (a problematic pattern of cannabis use that leads to clinically significant impairment or distress). This is the second update of a Cochrane Review first published in the Cochrane Library in Issue 12, 2014. Objectives To assess the effectiveness and safety of pharmacotherapies as compared with each other, placebo or no pharmacotherapy (supportive care) for reducing symptoms of cannabis withdrawal and promoting cessation or reduction of cannabis use. Search methods We updated our searches of...

Considerations for Anesthesia in Older Adults with Cannabis Use

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Over the past decade, legislative changes occurred in the USA and the western world that were followed by a substantial increase in reported use of cannabis among the general population. Among patients undergoing anesthesia for surgery or interventional procedures, older patients—often defined as adults over 65 years—are one of the fastest-growing populations. Within this group, the prevalence of cannabis use almost tripled over the past decade. In addition to habitual cannabis use, recommendations for treatment of chronic pain with cannabinoids have become increasingly more common. The clinical relevance of cannabis use in older adults is supported...

The relationship between cannabis and nicotine use: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract Background and aims Cannabis and nicotine (tobacco or e-cigarettes) use commonly co-occurs and understanding their relationship can help to inform public health strategies to prevent their harms. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the association of cannabis use given prior nicotine use and vice versa. Methods PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Google Scholar and a hand-search were conducted in 2023 for longitudinal studies of the general population with no restrictions in settings (locations). Random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to estimate odds ratios between cannabis and nicotine use in both directions. The impact of unmeasured confounding was assessed using E-values. Results From 5387 identified...

Phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of Cannabis sativa fruit (Cannabis Fructus)

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Cannabis sativa fruit (Cannabis Fructus) refers to the dried and ripe fruit of Cannabis sativa L. It is widely distributed in the northeast, North, and South China. It has medicinal, ecological, and economic values. This study aimed to review the chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of Cannabis Fructus, providing a reference for further exploration of Cannabis Fructus. Comprehensive information on Cannabis Fructus was collected via electronic searches (e.g., Google Scholar, PubMed, Sci Finder, and Web of Science) and from books on phytochemistry. Cannabis Fructus contains various compounds such as phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, steroids and terpenoids, cannabinoids, fatty acids, alkaloids, phenanthrenes, proteins, and polysaccharides. Its active ingredients exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant,...

Cannabis use before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery: literature review

Abstract As accessibility and legalization of cannabis rise throughout the United States (US), programs have sought guidance about whether its use should be considered a contraindication or, if not a contraindication, what recommendations patients should receive regarding appropriate use before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS). In this review, medical, nutritional, pharmacological, and psychological considerations are presented by a multidisciplinary group of members of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Research suggests several risks associated with long-term cannabis use in the general population, but research in the MBS population, specifically, is limited. Cannabis use is not associated with most postoperative...

Cannabis Use Among Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer: A Scoping Review

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract There have been recent increases in cannabis use for medical and non-medical (i.e., “recreational”) purposes. One prominent medical use is for cancer-related symptoms. Young adults with a cancer history may have unique cannabis use characteristics, yet little research has examined this topic. This scoping review assessed the literature on cannabis use among young adults with a history of cancer. In October 2024, we conducted a MEDLINE/PubMed search for empirical, peer-reviewed articles written in English. Inclusion criteria were (1) primary research, (2) included participants ages 18–39 previously diagnosed with cancer, (3) included data on cannabis use,...

Effectiveness and safety of cannabis-based products for medical use in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome: A systematic review

Abstract Background: There is a need to explore pharmacological options for syndrome (FMS), such as medical cannabis. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize and analyze the available information about the effectiveness/efficacy and safety of cannabis-based products for medical use (CBPMs) and cannabis-based medicines (CBMs), in patients with FMS. Methods: Interventional or observational studies, systematic reviews and meta-analysis regarding the effectiveness/efficacy and safety of CBPMs and CBMs in patients with FMS were retrieved from the PubMed/Medline database until April 2024. Then, the information was summarized in tables, with the type of CBPM and CBM, the method used in the study and the effective-ness/efficacy and safety outcomes. Results: 19...
