Cannabis-Associated Emergencies in the Emergency Department

Abstract Background: Now that the Cannabis Act legalizing the use of cannabis has come into effect in Germany, the frequency of cannabis use in Germany may rise, and with it the number of cannabisrelated visits to emergency departments. Methods: In this narrative review, we identify and evaluate the observed trends in case numbers after cannabis legalization in other countries, the common reasons for emergency department visits, and the options for treatment. Data on trends in cannabis-related emergency contacts in Germany were provided by the Poison Control Center North and are evaluated descriptively. Results: The prevalence of cannabis use in Europe is estimated at 8%. In Canada, after...

Cannabis sativa: From Plants to Humans

Abstract This Special Issue aims to highlight some of the most recent developments in the study of Cannabis sativa by collecting contributions that range from studies on the crop and its interaction with the environment and pathogens to the pharmaceutical applications of cannabinoid-based drugs, also including the health risks associated with the consumption of C [...].

Cardiovascular risk associated with the use of cannabis and cannabinoids: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract Background: Awareness has recently risen about the potential associated risks to the cardiovascular health of cannabis users. The objective was to evaluate the possible association between major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and the use of cannabis or cannabinoids. Methods: Original pharmacoepidemiological studies providing risk estimates on cannabis-related MACE (ie, cardiovascular death, non-fatal acute coronary syndrome (ACS) including myocardial infarction (MI) or non-fatal stroke) published from 1 January 2016 to 31 January 2023 were included in the systematic review exploring PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus (last search: 20 September 2023). Design, duration, baseline characteristics, exposure, inclusion criteria, sample size, effect size and confusing factors, including...

Cannabis Use During Adolescence and Young Adulthood and Academic Achievement: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Importance: Cannabis use during adolescence and young adulthood may affect academic achievement; however, the magnitude of association remains unclear. Objective: To conduct a systematic review evaluating the association between cannabis use and academic performance. Data sources: CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to November 10, 2023. Study selection: Observational studies examining the association of cannabis use with academic outcomes were selected. The literature search identified 17 622 unique citations. Data extraction and synthesis: Pairs of reviewers independently assessed risk of bias and extracted data. Both random-effects models and fixed-effects models were used for meta-analyses,...

Cannabis and Veterinary Medicine

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Cannabis and Veterinary Medicine explores the growing role of cannabis in veterinary medicine, highlighting its therapeutic potential and challenges. It discusses the complexities of the endocannabinoid system and its regulation of physiologic processes. Emphasis is placed on cannabinoids like delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol, and minor cannabinoids, alongside terpenes and flavonoids. In addition, the article addresses legal issues, clinical applications, safety, dosing strategies, and the significance of product quality.

Cannabis, Endocannabinoids and Brain Development: From Embryogenesis to Adolescence

Abstract The endocannabinoid signalling system (ECS) plays a critical role from the very beginning of embryogenesis. Accordingly, the ECS is engaged early on in nervous system development, starting from neurulation, supported by the identification of ECS components—both receptors and enzymes controlling endocannabinoid metabolism—at these early stages. In particular, regarding the brain, the ECS is involved in the tightly regulated sequence of events that comprise brain development, from neurogenesis to neuronal migration, morphological guidance for neuronal connectivity, and synaptic circuitry refinement. The importance of this broad role of the ECS across various brain development processes is further underscored by the growing understanding of the consequences...

Cannabis concentrate vaping chemistry

Abstract Background: This review article addresses the vaping chemistry of manufactured cannabis concentrates-a topic that remains under-researched despite the widespread availability and growing popularity of these products. Given their current prevalence and the fact that many of the findings discussed herein are from early-stage investigations, further research is essential to fully assess the public health risks associated with concentrate use. The purpose of this article is to help begin to bridge this knowledge gap by outlining the technical challenges of studying cannabis concentrates and to present evidence-based data concerning toxicant exposures as a foundation for future investigations. Methods: A search of cannabis concentrate vaping within the...

Maternal Cannabis Use During Pregnancy and Maternal and Neonatal Adverse Outcomes

Abstract Cannabis is a psychoactive substance the availability and use of which, in various forms, has been liberalized in many countries across the world. Cannabis use, including by women of reproductive age, has become increasingly common, with (in some studies) >5% of women using the substance even during pregnancy to self treat nausea, vomiting, stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and other conditions. Women who use cannabis during pregnancy are more likely to have a medical or mental health condition; they are commonly unaware that cannabis is associated with pregnancy related risks. These risks arise from effects of cannabis on cannabinoid receptors in the...

Cannabis, Weight, and Weight-Related Behaviors

Abstract Purpose of Review Review recent research regarding the relationship between cannabis use, weight, eating behaviors, eating disorders, and physical activity. Recent Findings Cannabis, particularly the cannabinoid Δ9-tegrahydrocannabinol (THC), is associated with increased appetite, food cravings, overconsumption, and decreased physical activity. Cannabidiol (CBD) appears to be associated with decreased appetite. While cannabis use is not correlated with binge eating, cannabis use disorder is associated with loss of control eating. Despite cannabis’ association with unhealthy eating and sedentary behavior, most studies suggest that cannabis use is not associated with weight gain, or may even facilitate weight loss. Summary The state of the literature regarding the...

Cannabis Use in Adolescents

Please use this link to access this publication. Abstract Cannabis (also called marijuana) is naturally derived from the cannabis plant and can be consumed in many different product formulations that have varying concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most prevalent psychoactive substance. Almost half of states in the United States have legalized recreational use for adults. Fortunately, longitudinal epidemiological studies indicate that less than 20% of youth report current cannabis use and that their lifetime use has actually decreased over the last few decades. Nevertheless, with the increasing availability of different formulations with higher concentrations of THC and notable increase in use among adults, pediatricians...
